Chicken & Marinade
- 700 g boneless skinless chicken thighs or breasts, sliced
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 3 tbsp lemon juice
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
Tzatziki Sauce
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1/2 cucumber, grated and excess water squeezed out
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1–2 cloves garlic, finely minced
- 1 tbsp fresh dill (or 1 tsp dried dill)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For Assembly
- 4 pita breads (whole wheat or white)
- 1 cup lettuce, shredded
- 1 tomato, sliced
- 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
- Optional: feta cheese, olives, pickled peppers
Instructions
Step 1: Marinate the chicken
In a bowl, mix:
- Olive oil
- Lemon juice
- Garlic
- Oregano
- Paprika
- Cumin
- Salt
- Pepper
- Onion powder
Add chicken and toss to coat evenly.
Cover and marinate for:
- At least 30 minutes (or up to 8 hours for deeper flavor)
Step 2: Prepare tzatziki sauce
Grate cucumber and squeeze out excess moisture using a clean cloth or paper towel.
In a bowl, combine:
- Greek yogurt
- Cucumber
- Olive oil
- Lemon juice
- Garlic
- Dill
- Salt and pepper
Mix well and refrigerate until serving.
Step 3: Cook the chicken
Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat.
Cook chicken for:
- 5–7 minutes per side
Until golden and fully cooked (internal temp 74°C / 165°F).
Let rest for 5 minutes, then slice if needed.
Step 4: Warm the pita
Warm pita bread in:
- Dry skillet (30–60 seconds per side), or
- Oven wrapped in foil at 180°C (350°F) for 5 minutes
Step 5: Assemble gyros
Layer inside pita:
- Lettuce
- Chicken
- Tomato
- Red onion
- Tzatziki sauce
Add optional toppings if desired.
Fold and serve immediately.
