Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 2 bell peppers (red and green), sliced
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • ¼ cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Sesame seeds and sliced green onions, for garnish

Instructions

1. Marinate the Steak

  • In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and black pepper.
  • Add the sliced steak and marinate for 20–30 minutes.

2. Prepare the Vegetables

  • Toss the sliced bell peppers and onions with olive oil.

3. Air Fry the Steak

  • Preheat the air fryer to 390°F (199°C).
  • Arrange the marinated steak in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
  • Cook for 6–8 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through.

4. Air Fry the Vegetables

  • Add the bell peppers and onions to the air fryer.
  • Cook for an additional 6–8 minutes, shaking halfway through, until the vegetables are tender-crisp.

5. Make the Sauce

  • In a small saucepan, combine any remaining marinade with 2 tablespoons water. Bring to a boil.
  • Mix the cornstarch with 1 tablespoon water to make a slurry, then stir it into the sauce.
  • Simmer for 1–2 minutes, until thickened.

6. Finish & Serve

  • Toss the cooked steak and vegetables with the thickened sauce.
  • Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions.
  • Serve hot over steamed rice, fried rice, or noodles.
