Buckle up, streamers! AV2, the next big thing in video streaming, is here to give your favorite services a massive upgrade. While it might not single-handedly resurrect 3D TV (only six people are still holding out hope, anyway), it’s set to make your streaming experience smoother than ever.
A new report from FlatpanelsHD reveals that AV2, the successor to the popular AV1 standard, is poised to give your bandwidth a break while delivering top-notch video quality. Netflix’s own research scientist, Andrey Norkin, spilled the beans on AV2’s impressive performance at a recent presentation. Joined by experts from tech giants like Apple, Google, Meta, and Tencent, Norkin shared some eye-opening benchmarks.
So, what’s AV2 packing under the hood? In a nutshell, it offers 30% better video compression than AV1. That means AV2 can deliver the same video quality as AV1 using 30% less bandwidth. This is a game-changer for 4K and 8K streaming, as it could encourage services to offer higher quality streams without breaking the bank.
But here’s where things get really interesting: AV2 is designed to handle multiple video streams at once. Imagine watching a 3D movie, a multi-camera event, or even VR/AR content – AV2 can handle it all without breaking a sweat. With heavy hitters like Disney and Apple already on board, we could be in for a wave of immersive streaming experiences.
The full AV2 spec is set to drop later this year, and 53% of the Alliance for Open Media members are planning to adopt it within the next 12 months. So, mark your calendars, folks – the future of streaming is almost here!
