‘Strava Caves to Garmin’s Demands: Here’s What’s Changing for Users’

Strava has finally broken its silence on the ongoing feud with Garmin, and it’s not great news for Strava users who also own Garmin devices. After reaching out for comment, Strava provided a statement to TechRadar that, while diplomatic, hints at capitulating to some of Garmin’s demands.

What’s the beef?

In case you’ve been living under a rock, here’s a quick recap. Strava sued Garmin, alleging patent infringement over segments and heatmaps, and asked for a halt on Garmin watch sales. Meanwhile, Garmin wants more prominent attribution (including a logo) when a Strava user uploads data from a Garmin watch. This change is set to happen on November 1.

Strava’s statement

Strava told us, “While we don’t agree with the extensive branding Garmin is forcing, uninterrupted connectivity for our Garmin-using community is our top priority. We’ll give similar attribution to all our device partners going forward, to be fair.”

What does this mean?

In plain English, Strava is giving in to Garmin’s demands. Expect to see Garmin logos on Strava posts from Garmin devices. Strava’s doing this to keep the data flowing, as a lot of its data comes from Garmin devices. Plus, they’re reportedly considering an IPO, so they want to keep things smooth.

Strava also plans to apply this expanded attribution to data from other devices like Apple Watches and Samsung watches. So, get ready to see more logos on your Strava feed.

Legal stuff

Neither side is commenting on the patent infringement lawsuit yet. But now that one issue seems to be resolving, maybe Strava will withdraw or settle out of court. Either way, Garmin’s watches aren’t going anywhere, especially not before Black Friday.

Stay tuned for more updates on this ongoing saga!

Afghanistan’s VPN Boom: A 35,000% Surge as Taliban Restricts Social Media

Afghans are flocking to VPNs like never before, with usage skyrocketing by a staggering 35,000% since last Tuesday, October 7. The sudden spike comes in response to the Taliban’s restrictions on social media platforms.

Proton VPN, a popular free VPN service, has witnessed this unprecedented surge, with usage soaring far above its baseline. According to Top10VPN, VPN demand in Afghanistan has surged by a whopping 574% compared to the daily average over the past 28 days.

The Taliban government has confirmed the restrictions, although they’ve been tight-lipped about the specifics. A source told the BBC that the filtering is extensive, covering “almost the whole country, and most provinces.”

NetBlocks, an internet watchdog, reports that access to popular platforms like Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and Snapchat is completely blocked on multiple providers across Afghanistan. They’ve also recorded regional internet shutdowns in Kandahar.

This isn’t the first time Afghanistan has faced internet restrictions. Just a week ago, the Taliban government imposed a 48-hour nationwide internet and telephone blackout, supposedly to “prevent immorality.” Even VPNs couldn’t help citizens stay connected during that time.

How a VPN Can Help

A VPN, or virtual private network, encrypts your internet connection and masks your IP address. This allows you to bypass restrictions by connecting to a server outside of Afghanistan, fooling your local internet service provider into granting access to censored sites.

Proton VPN has seen similar spikes in usage this year due to government-imposed restrictions, with incidents linked to political turmoil and child safety concerns. For instance, a 5-day social media ban in Nepal led to an 8,000% spike in VPN sign-ups in September.

While Proton VPN Free is a secure option, consider checking out our guide to the best cheap VPNs if you’re looking for premium protection at a lower cost.

Medical Data of 1.2 Million Patients Exposed in Massive Cyber Heist!”

In a shocking turn of events, SimonMed Imaging, a prominent US outpatient medical imaging and radiology provider, has fallen victim to a brazen cyberattack. The result? Sensitive data on over 1.2 million patients has been compromised.

The company recently filed a report with the Maine Attorney General’s office, revealing that one of its vendors alerted them to a security incident in late January. The next day, SimonMed discovered unauthorized activity on their own network. They swiftly responded by resetting passwords, implementing two-factor authentication, setting up endpoint detection, and cutting off third-party vendor access. But the damage was already done.

Between January 21 and February 5, cybercriminals behind the Medusa ransomware group managed to exfiltrate a massive trove of sensitive data. While SimonMed is keeping tight-lipped about the exact details, they’ve confirmed that names and other “data elements” were stolen. Meanwhile, BleepingComputer reports that the hackers claim to have snatched 212GB of data, including ID scans, patient details, payment info, medical reports, and even raw scans.

Adding insult to injury, the Medusa group demanded a hefty $1 million ransom to delete the stolen data, with an additional $10,000 for each day they delayed publishing it. It’s unclear whether SimonMed paid the ransom, but the data leak site has since removed the company’s information.

In response to the breach, SimonMed has notified relevant authorities and brought in third-party cybersecurity experts to assess the damage. They’re also offering affected patients free identity theft and credit monitoring services through Experian.

So, what can you do to protect yourself? Stay vigilant, keep your software up-to-date, and consider using a password manager and authenticator app. And remember, if you’re a SimonMed patient, keep an eye on your credit reports and be on the lookout for any suspicious activity.

Stay safe out there, folks!

🔄 How to Get It: If you’re a Windows Insider, you can grab the update (version 1.25095.161 or later) from the Microsoft Store. But remember, it’s a gradual rollout, so it might take a bit to reach everyone.

Android Auto’s Latest Update Just Broke This Key Feature – Users Furious!”

Buckle up, Android Auto users! The latest update, version 15.2, has just hit our dashboards, but it’s not all smooth sailing. A beloved feature, Quick Controls, has taken a nose-dive, leaving many of us frustrated and scratching our heads.

Quick Controls, for those not in the know, is that handy widget that lets you control your media and check directions, even when you’re busy with other apps. But with Android Auto 15.2, it seems to have lost its mojo in vertical orientation. Users have been flooding Reddit and Google’s official forums with complaints, reporting that enabling Quick Controls now does nothing, leaving the taskbar stuck along the vertical edge of the screen.

John Fed on the Google forums summed it up: “This is driving me crazy!” while Reddit user lorenmatt93 called it “annoying” and a “bug that’s been around for months”.

Bug or Bye Bye, Quick Controls?

Here’s where things get interesting. Google recently switched to a dashboard design, and Quick Controls took a backseat, replaced by an app shortcut bar. Now, you have to manually enable it in settings. So, is this ‘bug’ just Google phasing out Quick Controls? Or is it a simple oversight?

Only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure, this issue has got users in a twist. Let’s hope Google releases a patch soon to fix this glitch.

In the meantime, why not check out our list of the 9 best Android Automotive apps to upgrade your driving experience in 2025? Or keep an eye out for Android Auto’s upcoming Gemini upgrade and refreshed look. And yes, there’s more! Android Auto is also getting video and browser apps for your car dashboard, along with more weather apps too!
