Mark your calendars, folks! Harlan Coben’s ‘Lazarus’ is set to hit Prime Video on October 22, and let me tell you, this six-part series is not for the faint-hearted. I’m keeping the spoilers at bay, but trust me, you’re in for a wild ride.
‘Lazarus’ follows a forensic psychologist, known only as Laz (Sam Claflin), as he delves into a world of cold cases after his father, Dr. Lazarus (Bill Nighy), passes away. But don’t let that simple synopsis fool you – this show is anything but straightforward.
If you’ve been a fan of Coben’s previous Netflix shows like ‘Fool Me Once’ and ‘Missing You’, you know the man is a master of mystery, packing his stories with twists that’ll keep you up at night. So, which twist is the most unexpected? I put that question to Alexandra Roach, who plays Jenna in the series, and her answer was a game-changer.
Spoiler alert! (sort of) Harlan Coben’s biggest twist is hiding in plain sight – in episode 1! Roach couldn’t believe what she was reading when she first got the script. “Literally anything can happen, and it does,” she reveals. “Within the end of the first episode, you’re just sat there, open-mouthed. You think you’ve seen it all, and then suddenly, it takes a sharp turn. You’re in a completely different world. It’s brilliant!”
I won’t spoil the surprise, but let’s just say that the ending of episode 1 will leave you stunned. Coben is a master storyteller, and his ability to keep us on the edge of our seats is unmatched.
But how surprised should you be when you’re binging ‘Lazarus’? On my totally made-up ‘surprise-o-meter’ (where Midsomer Murders is at the bottom and Utopia is at the top), Roach rates ‘Lazarus’ around an 8 or 9. “As humans, we love to be surprised,” she says. “There’s so much content out there, and it’s really nice to have that raw experience of not knowing where the story is going.”
