Now, let’s get back to AI in healthcare. We’ve all heard the hype, but integrating AI into safety-net clinics isn’t as easy as ordering a taco. STAT+ spoke to three clinics about their challenges:
1. Data Privacy and Security: Safety-net clinics often lack the resources to ensure patient data is secure. AI systems require vast amounts of data, but clinics worry about breaches and patient trust.
2. Staff Training: AI isn’t just about plugging in a new tool; it requires staff training. Clinics struggle to find the time and resources to educate their teams on how to use and interpret AI outputs.
3. Cost and Infrastructure: AI systems can be expensive to implement and maintain. Many safety-net clinics operate on tight budgets and lack the necessary infrastructure to support these technologies.
Despite these challenges, clinics remain optimistic about AI’s potential to improve patient care. They’re working on finding solutions, like partnering with tech companies and leveraging government funding.
