In the realm of household chores, I’m renowned among my loved ones for maintaining a pristine home. This isn’t just a matter of personal preference; it’s a necessity given that I work from home and require a clean, clutter-free space to focus. Perhaps it’s my father’s influence, or perhaps it’s the simple joy I find in a spotless floor, but I’ve been known to break out the vacuum at least once a day to tackle dirt, debris, or errant food crumbs. This penchant for cleanliness has led me to develop a keen eye for vacuums, and this year, my favorite has been the Shark PowerDetect Cordless Stick Vacuum, complete with an auto-empty dock and charge station.
Upon arrival, the box contained the dock and charge station, which took mere minutes to unpack and assemble. I was eager to put the vacuum through its paces, starting with my historic hardwood and laminate floors, followed by two large rugs in my living room and study.
The Shark PowerDetect Cordless Stick Vacuum is designed to simplify floor cleaning in numerous ways. Its standout feature is the DirtDetect system, which automatically boosts suction power when it senses dirt and debris on the floor. The vacuum’s screen and floorhead would display a purple color when dirt was present, switching to white once the area was clean. This system ensured I didn’t miss any spots, as I would have otherwise.
EdgeDetect technology was another impressive feature, enabling the vacuum to recognize edges and increase suction power along the side of the floorhead that touched the edge. The ‘reverse cleaning’ feature, which allows the floorhead to suck up chunky particles when pulled back over them, was equally impressive. However, it struggled with extra-large cereal pieces, a challenge even the best cordless vacuums face.
The Shark vacuum also recognized the type of floor I was cleaning, increasing suction power when necessary, such as when I vacuumed my rugs. Its headlights automatically turned on when cleaning in dark corners or spaces, ensuring I could see and suction even the dustiest spots.
While the vacuum offers Eco and Boost modes, I rarely used them. The DirtDetect mode performed exceptionally well, and the suction capabilities of Boost were only needed for extra-large debris. Eco mode could extend battery life to 67 minutes, but it wasn’t effective on rugs or carpet. Given that it took me just 30 minutes to vacuum my entire house, and the battery lasted 47 minutes on DirtDetect mode, I found little need for Eco mode.
One feature I absolutely loved was the bendable wand. This allowed me to clean under my bed, baker’s rack, couch, and under chairs without having to contort myself. It’s a small design feature that doesn’t get enough praise, in my opinion, and one that truly sets the best Shark vacuums apart.
I put the Shark PowerDetect Cordless Stick Vacuum through a series of cleaning tests, and it excelled in picking up fine materials like dust, tea, and flour, as well as larger debris like dirt and cereal. With the included accessories, I dusted my window blinds and cleaned my car and couch. However, I should note that when cleaning hair off my sofa, I had to use Boost mode, and the results were somewhat underwhelming. I’ve yet to find a vacuum that impresses me when it comes to removing hair from a couch.
The auto-empty dock station was a godsend. After cleaning, I simply placed the vacuum on the dock, and it automatically emptied the dust and debris into a vacuum-sealed bag that doesn’t need frequent changing. Once the dust and dirt were sealed away, the vacuum began to charge, taking about four hours for a full charge.

Whether I was maneuvering the vacuum head around furniture, using the tall wand and accessories to reach spider webs in the corners of my 10-foot ceilings, or bending the wand to clean under my couch, the design combined with the DirtDetect technology ensured my home was the cleanest it could be. I have no doubt that anyone who brings this vacuum into their home will experience the same level of cleanliness.
