Chinese Chicken Cabbage Stir-Fry
Ingredients
- 1 lb (450 g) boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1 tbsp butter or vegetable oil
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 cups cabbage, chopped
- 1 cup carrots, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce (optional)
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt to taste
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Cook the chicken
- Heat the butter or oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
- Add the chicken pieces and season with a little salt and pepper.
- Cook for 5–7 minutes until lightly browned and cooked through.
- Remove and set aside.
- Sauté aromatics
- In the same pan, add the onion and cook for 2–3 minutes.
- Add the garlic and stir for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Cook vegetables
- Add the carrots and bell pepper. Stir-fry for 2 minutes.
- Add the cabbage and cook for another 3–5 minutes, stirring frequently until slightly tender but still crisp.
- Combine
- Return the chicken to the pan.
- Add soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes.
- Stir well and cook for 2 more minutes.
- Serve
- Taste and adjust seasoning.
- Garnish with sesame seeds if desired.
- Serve hot on its own or over steamed rice or noodles.
Tips
- For extra flavor, add 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger with the garlic.
- Use chicken thighs instead of breast for a juicier stir-fry.
- Add mushrooms, snow peas, or broccoli for more vegetables.
