Chinese Chicken Cabbage Stir-Fry

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 tbsp butter or vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 cups cabbage, chopped
  • 1 cup carrots, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce (optional)
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Cook the chicken
    • Heat the butter or oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
    • Add the chicken pieces and season with a little salt and pepper.
    • Cook for 5–7 minutes until lightly browned and cooked through.
    • Remove and set aside.
  2. Sauté aromatics
    • In the same pan, add the onion and cook for 2–3 minutes.
    • Add the garlic and stir for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Cook vegetables
    • Add the carrots and bell pepper. Stir-fry for 2 minutes.
    • Add the cabbage and cook for another 3–5 minutes, stirring frequently until slightly tender but still crisp.
  4. Combine
    • Return the chicken to the pan.
    • Add soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes.
    • Stir well and cook for 2 more minutes.
  5. Serve
    • Taste and adjust seasoning.
    • Garnish with sesame seeds if desired.
    • Serve hot on its own or over steamed rice or noodles.

Tips

  • For extra flavor, add 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger with the garlic.
  • Use chicken thighs instead of breast for a juicier stir-fry.
  • Add mushrooms, snow peas, or broccoli for more vegetables.
