🥪 Classic Croque Monsieur
A golden French ham-and-cheese sandwich topped with creamy béchamel and bubbly Gruyère.

Ingredients
Béchamel
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup warm whole milk
- Pinch of nutmeg
- Salt and black pepper
Sandwiches
- 4 thick slices white bread or sourdough
- 2 tbsp softened butter
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 4–6 slices deli ham
- 1½ cups shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
- Green onion, optional
Directions
- Melt butter in a saucepan. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in warm milk and cook 2–3 minutes, until thick. Season with nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
- Heat oven to 400°F (200°C) or set the broiler to high. Butter both sides of the bread and toast for about 3 minutes per side.
- Spread Dijon on two slices. Add half the cheese and the ham, then top with the remaining bread.
- Spread béchamel generously over the sandwiches and top with remaining cheese.
- Broil for 4–6 minutes, until melted, bubbly, and golden brown. Rest for 2 minutes, slice, and serve.
