Cornish pasties are a beloved British pastry featuring a golden, flaky crust wrapped around a hearty filling of beef, potato, onion, and swede (rutabaga). Cooking them in an air fryer creates the same crisp, beautifully browned exterior as a traditional oven while reducing cooking time and energy use. The result is a satisfying handheld meal that’s perfect for lunch, dinner, or meal prep.
The traditional filling relies on simple ingredients that cook together inside the pastry, allowing the meat and vegetables to release their flavors as they bake. As the pasties cook, the juices from the beef mingle with the vegetables, creating a rich, savory filling that remains moist and flavorful.
Air fryers are particularly well suited to pasties because the circulating hot air helps puff and crisp the pastry evenly. Brushing the tops with egg wash before cooking gives them an attractive golden finish and enhances the flaky texture of the crust.
These pasties can be enjoyed hot straight from the air fryer or served at room temperature. They are excellent on their own, but they also pair well with a simple green salad, baked beans, or a bowl of soup. Leftovers reheat beautifully in the air fryer, restoring the pastry’s crispness.
Nutritionally, Cornish pasties provide protein from the beef, carbohydrates from the pastry and vegetables, and a variety of vitamins and minerals. They are a complete and filling meal that has remained popular for generations because of their practicality and comforting flavor.
