**Unmasking the Power of iPhone’s Portrait Mode: A Decade of Evolution**
In the realm of photography, not all heroes wear capes. Some wield smartphones, like the iPhone 17 Pro Max, capturing extraordinary portraits with just a tap. This year’s New York Comic Con, held at the Jacob Javits Center, served as the perfect stage for this photographic prowess, courtesy of the iPhone’s Portrait Mode.
The journey began nearly a decade ago, in 2016, when I embarked on a mission to test the then-new iPhone 7 Plus’s dual-camera Portrait Mode at that year’s culture, comic book, entertainment, and convention. The goal was to capture stunning images using the new mode, amidst the vibrant chaos of the event.
The results were promising, given the technology’s infancy. However, it was a learning experience. The convention’s bustling environment posed challenges, with thousands of people crossing in front of and behind my shots. The camera often struggled to focus on the intended subject, leading to a ‘rough’ bokeh effect that sometimes cut out cosplayers and lost details like props and fly-away hair.
Fast forward to 2025, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s Portrait Mode has evolved significantly. My new collection of photos from this year’s Comic Con is a testament to this progress. I no longer worry about lighting, as I have almost infinite control over the amount of bokeh. The subtlety and realism are astounding, with the camera rarely fooled by complex scenes. It effortlessly distinguishes the subject from their props and the background, maintaining depth and focus.
Take, for instance, the lead image: the iPhone perfectly focused on the cosplayer’s face while softly blurring the background, including the bat top that could have easily confused the camera. Lighting conditions were no match for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which adjusted seamlessly, leaving me with well-exposed images that required minimal editing.
Comparing today’s iPhone portrait mode photography with 2016 is like comparing apples and oranges. The advancements are staggering. The iPhone 17 Pro Max’s Portrait Mode is not just an upgrade; it’s a leap forward in mobile photography.
How often do you harness the power of your iPhone’s Portrait Mode? I’d love to hear your experiences in the comments.
