Old-Fashioned Potato Cakes in the Air Fryer

Old-Fashioned Potato Cakes in the Air Fryer

Old-fashioned potato cakes are a comforting way to transform leftover mashed potatoes into a crispy, golden treat. Traditionally cooked in a skillet, these potato cakes adapt beautifully to the air fryer, producing a crunchy exterior and a soft, fluffy center with much less oil. They are perfect for breakfast, brunch, a side dish, or a savory snack.

This classic recipe has been passed down through generations because it is simple, economical, and delicious. The combination of mashed potatoes, onion, and seasonings creates a hearty cake that can be enjoyed on its own or paired with eggs, vegetables, or a fresh salad. Air frying modernizes the recipe while preserving its nostalgic flavor.

The key to successful potato cakes is using chilled mashed potatoes. Cold potatoes hold their shape better and are easier to form into patties. A small amount of flour and egg helps bind the mixture, ensuring the cakes remain intact during cooking while developing a crisp crust.

The air fryer circulates hot air around each cake, creating even browning and reducing the need for excess fat. A light spray of oil is all that’s required to achieve a beautifully golden finish. The result is a potato cake that is crisp on the outside and tender on the inside.

Nutritionally, potato cakes provide complex carbohydrates for energy, along with potassium, vitamin C, and small amounts of protein. Air frying lowers the fat content compared to pan-frying, making this a lighter version of a traditional comfort-food favorite.
