Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions (Air Fryer Version)

Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions (Air Fryer Version)

Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions in the air fryer is a faster, less oily twist on the classic wok-fried dish. It keeps the same bold flavors—savory soy, aromatic garlic, and sharp black pepper—but uses the air fryer’s circulating heat to create tender beef with lightly caramelized edges and perfectly cooked onions. The result is a satisfying “sizzling-style” meal without needing a stovetop wok.

This version focuses on convenience while still delivering deep flavor. The beef is marinated first so it absorbs the sauce, then quickly air-fried to lock in juiciness. The onions and optional bell peppers soften and slightly char in the air fryer basket, adding natural sweetness that balances the peppery heat of the dish.

One advantage of using the air fryer is consistency. High heat circulation ensures the beef cooks evenly without constant stirring, and the onions develop a roasted flavor rather than just stir-fried softness. It’s ideal for busy cooking when you still want restaurant-style results with minimal effort.

This dish works beautifully as a main course with rice, noodles, or even on its own for a lower-carb option. It’s a strong example of how traditional Chinese-American flavors can be adapted for modern kitchen appliances without losing their signature taste.

Ingredients

  • 300 g beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper (freshly ground preferred)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (or keto sweetener optional)
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 2 tablespoons water or beef broth
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine beef with soy sauce, cornstarch, black pepper, garlic, ginger, and half the oil. Marinate for 15–20 minutes.
  2. Preheat the air fryer to 190°C (375°F) for 3 minutes.
  3. Add beef to the air fryer basket in a single layer and cook for 6–8 minutes, shaking halfway through.
  4. Add sliced onions and bell peppers, lightly tossed in remaining oil. Air fry for another 4–5 minutes until slightly caramelized.
  5. Transfer everything to a bowl or pan.
  6. Mix in oyster sauce, water or broth, and extra black pepper. Toss well to coat evenly.
  7. Serve hot immediately for best flavor and texture.
