- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp soy sauce (optional, for extra flavor)
- ½ tsp dried thyme
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Steaks
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Mix gently until just combined.
- Divide into 4–6 equal portions and shape into oval patties about ½ inch thick.
2. Brown the Patties
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes per side until nicely browned.
- Transfer to a plate (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).
3. Make the Gravy
- In the same skillet, melt the butter.
- Add the onions and cook for 5–7 minutes until softened.
- Stir in the mushrooms and cook another 5 minutes until browned.
- Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
- Sprinkle in the flour and stir constantly for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth until smooth.
- Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, and thyme.
- Simmer for 3–5 minutes until the gravy thickens.
4. Finish the Dish
- Return the Salisbury steaks to the skillet.
- Spoon the gravy over the patties.
- Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes, or until the steaks reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
5. Serve
Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot with:
- Creamy mashed potatoes
- Buttered egg noodles
- Steamed green beans
- Roasted carrots
- Rice
Tips
- For extra-rich gravy, stir in 2 tablespoons of heavy cream during the last minute of cooking.
- Cremini or baby bella mushrooms provide a deeper flavor than white button mushrooms.
- Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat beautifully.
