  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter (for cooking)

For the Onion Mushroom Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz (225 g) mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp soy sauce (optional, for extra flavor)
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Steaks

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
  2. Mix gently until just combined.
  3. Divide into 4–6 equal portions and shape into oval patties about ½ inch thick.

2. Brown the Patties

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes per side until nicely browned.
  3. Transfer to a plate (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).

3. Make the Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt the butter.
  2. Add the onions and cook for 5–7 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in the mushrooms and cook another 5 minutes until browned.
  4. Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  5. Sprinkle in the flour and stir constantly for 1 minute.
  6. Gradually whisk in the beef broth until smooth.
  7. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, and thyme.
  8. Simmer for 3–5 minutes until the gravy thickens.

4. Finish the Dish

  1. Return the Salisbury steaks to the skillet.
  2. Spoon the gravy over the patties.
  3. Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes, or until the steaks reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).

5. Serve

Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot with:

  • Creamy mashed potatoes
  • Buttered egg noodles
  • Steamed green beans
  • Roasted carrots
  • Rice

Tips

  • For extra-rich gravy, stir in 2 tablespoons of heavy cream during the last minute of cooking.
  • Cremini or baby bella mushrooms provide a deeper flavor than white button mushrooms.
  • Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat beautifully.
