🍄 Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy
Ingredients
For the Salisbury Steaks
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
- 1 large egg
- ¼ cup breadcrumbs
- ¼ cup finely chopped onion
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon oil, for browning
For the Mushroom Gravy
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 tablespoon butter
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- Salt, to taste
Instructions
- Make the steaks:
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix gently until just combined. - Shape:
Divide the mixture into 4–6 portions and shape each into an oval patty about ½–¾ inch thick. - Brown the patties:
Heat oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for about 2–3 minutes per side. They don’t need to be fully cooked yet. Remove and set aside. - Cook the vegetables:
Reduce heat to medium. Add butter, sliced mushrooms, and onion to the same skillet. Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are browned and the onions are tender. - Make the gravy:
Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and onions. Stir continuously for about 1 minute. Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps. - Season:
Add Worcestershire sauce, thyme, black pepper, and a little salt. Simmer for 3–5 minutes, until the gravy begins to thicken. - Finish cooking the steaks:
Return the browned patties to the gravy. Cover and simmer gently for 10–15 minutes, turning the patties once, until fully cooked and the gravy is thick and rich. - Serve:
Spoon plenty of mushroom gravy over the Salisbury steaks.
🥔 Best Served With
Creamy mashed potatoes, rice, egg noodles, or steamed green beans are excellent with the mushroom gravy.
Tip: For the especially rich, glossy gravy shown in the picture, let it simmer uncovered for a few extra minutes until it reaches your preferred thickness.
