Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy

🍄 Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy

Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steaks

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon oil, for browning

For the Mushroom Gravy

  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the steaks:
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Shape:
Divide the mixture into 4–6 portions and shape each into an oval patty about ½–¾ inch thick.
  3. Brown the patties:
Heat oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for about 2–3 minutes per side. They don’t need to be fully cooked yet. Remove and set aside.
  4. Cook the vegetables:
Reduce heat to medium. Add butter, sliced mushrooms, and onion to the same skillet. Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are browned and the onions are tender.
  5. Make the gravy:
Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and onions. Stir continuously for about 1 minute. Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps.
  6. Season:
Add Worcestershire sauce, thyme, black pepper, and a little salt. Simmer for 3–5 minutes, until the gravy begins to thicken.
  7. Finish cooking the steaks:
Return the browned patties to the gravy. Cover and simmer gently for 10–15 minutes, turning the patties once, until fully cooked and the gravy is thick and rich.
  8. Serve:
Spoon plenty of mushroom gravy over the Salisbury steaks.

🥔 Best Served With

Creamy mashed potatoes, rice, egg noodles, or steamed green beans are excellent with the mushroom gravy.

Tip: For the especially rich, glossy gravy shown in the picture, let it simmer uncovered for a few extra minutes until it reaches your preferred thickness.
