Cabbage and Ground Beef Skillet

🥬 Cabbage and Ground Beef Skillet

Ingredients

  • 1 small head cabbage, chopped
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 can (15 oz / 425 g) diced tomatoes
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • ½ cup beef broth or water

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef:
Heat olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook for 5–7 minutes, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.
  2. Add onion and garlic:
Add chopped onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened. Stir in garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
  3. Add the cabbage:
Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet. It may look like a lot at first, but it will shrink as it cooks.
  4. Add tomatoes and seasoning:
Stir in diced tomatoes, beef broth, salt, pepper, paprika, oregano, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes.
  5. Simmer:
Cover and cook over medium-low heat for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and the flavors have combined.
  6. Adjust and serve:
Taste and adjust the salt and pepper. If you prefer a thicker mixture, remove the lid and cook for another 3–5 minutes.

🍽️ Serving

Serve hot on its own, or over white rice, brown rice, or mashed potatoes. A little shredded cheese on top is also delicious.
