Greek chicken gyros

A flavorful, protein-packed version of classic chicken gyros that’s perfect in a pita or lettuce wrap.

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 1½ lb (680 g) boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, sliced into strips
  • 2 tbsp plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp ground cumin
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Tzatziki

  • 1 cup plain nonfat Greek yogurt
  • ½ cucumber, grated and squeezed dry
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh dill (or 1 tsp dried dill)
  • Salt and pepper

For Serving

  • Whole wheat pita or low-carb pita (optional)
  • Lettuce leaves (for a low-carb wrap)
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Sliced cucumber
  • Red onion, thinly sliced
  • Crumbled feta cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, oregano, paprika, cumin, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Add the chicken and marinate for at least 30 minutes (or up to overnight in the refrigerator).
  3. Cook the chicken in a hot skillet or on a grill for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until browned and cooked through (internal temperature 165°F/74°C).
  4. While the chicken cooks, mix all the tzatziki ingredients in a bowl and refrigerate until ready to use.
  5. Serve the chicken in a pita or lettuce wrap with tzatziki, tomatoes, cucumber, onion, and a sprinkle of feta if desired.

Meal Prep Tips

  • Marinate the chicken the night before for even more flavor.
  • Store the chicken and tzatziki separately in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Serve over a Greek salad or cauliflower rice for an easy, low-carb meal.
